  • Britain to join EU defence force: This week nine EU countries quietly pledged to create a joint military force for ‘rapid deployment’ in times of crisis. Britain is one of the nine and will be allowed to participate in the venture after Brexit. Read more here and here.
  • Corbyn pledges to recognise Palestine: The Labour leader has promised that a future Labour Government would recognise a State of Palestine. Read more here.
  • Assisted suicide appeal rejected: The UK Court of Appeal on Wednesday rejected the appeal of a terminally ill man to change existing legislation in order to wilfully end his own life. Read more here.
  • Trans people not allowed in single-sex spaces: The Government has confirmed that men who identify as women will not automatically be allowed into female-only spaces such as toilets and changing facilities. Read more here.

World Scene

  • EU agrees to share out migrant responsibility: After nine hours of talks and with differences still remaining, the limited deal includes voluntary agreement to restrict migrant movements and create ‘controlled centres’ for processing asylum requests. Read more here.
  • Pro-life win in US Supreme Court: The Supreme Court has ruled that pro-life pregnancy help clinics do not have to promote abortion as a reproductive ‘option’. Read more here.
  • Bulgaria moves to crack down on minority faiths: A new bill would restrict minority religious groups (such as evangelical Christians) by controlling the training of their leadership. Read more here.

Israel & Middle East

  • Erdogan wins sweeping powers in Turkey: After a close election, the incumbent Erdogan has emerged victorious – consolidating and extending his powers in a country that is becoming more and more autocratic. Read more here.
  • Prince William visits Israel: The Duke of Cambridge’s every move and word were scrutinised by the international press, with much speculation about the visit’s potential significance. Read more here and here.
  • Golan post taken by Syrian troops: As Assad’s troops continue their southern offensive, which this week has included the taking of an abandoned UN post in the de-militarised Golan Heights, some 50,000 Syrian civilians have been displaced - and many are fleeing into Israel. Read more here.
  • Iranians chant “Death to Palestine!”: Massive protests continue in Iran as ordinary citizens protest their own Government and both its domestic and its international dealings. Astonishing cries have been heard on the streets of Tehran. Read more here.
