Society & Politics

  • Anti-Semitic attack in Stamford Hill: A 47-year-old woman was arrested in London's Stamford Hill last weekend for running after Jewish children while brandishing a knife and shouting "I want to kill all you Jews". Read more here.
  • Majority of Irish GPs will refuse to provide abortion: A survey has found that nearly 70% of doctors in Ireland will refuse to perform abortions once they are legalised, with a further 20% still unsure. Read more here.
  • Newport church burns down: A catastrophic fire has ripped through the Bethel Community Church in Newport, South Wales. Two have been arrested for suspected arson. Read more here.
  • Theresa May urges Christians to engage in public life: At the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, attended by some 170 MPs and peers as well as church leaders, the Prime Minister said that the Christian Gospel had “transformed the United Kingdom”. Read more here.

  • 1000+ new believers in Scotland: An evangelism event in Scotland led by Billy Graham’s grandson Will has led to many people giving their lives to Christ. It was the first of several such events in the UK being planned by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Read more here.

World Scene

  • Immigration threatens to topple German government: Facing a divided coalition and a disintegrating support base, Angela Merkel will meet on Sunday with several EU neighbours to seek a longer-term solution to the migrant crisis. Read more here and here.
  • US withdraws from UNHRC: Nikki Haley made the announcement on Tuesday, describing the Human Rights Council as “a cesspool of political bias”. Read more here. The US’s disdain for the UNHRC’s obsession with bashing Israel is spreading - Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has also criticised it, saying that from 2019 Britain will vote against all such resolutions.
  • Pro-life, pro-family laws pay dividends: Thanks to family-friendly legislation in Hungary, marriages are up while divorces and abortions are down, by significant margins. Read more here.
  • Canadian university punished for Christian ethos: Christian university Trinity Western, BC, has been ruled against by Canada’s Supreme Court for its policy requiring students to abstain from extra-marital sex. The ruling means that law societies can refuse to accredit graduates from TW’s proposed new law school. Read more here and here.

Israel & Middle East

  • Gaza border tension remains critical: This week has seen a barrage of 45 rockets and mortars being fired at Israeli communities, attempts to breach the border, and some 30+ fires being ignited by incendiary kites and other devices, with efforts being made by the IDF to target key instigators. Meanwhile, news has emerged this week that the family of the Palestinian baby who died during the border protests some weeks ago was paid thousands by Hamas to claim IDF brutality, when the child passed away from an inherited illness.
  • Temple-era remains removed during Ramadan: The Muslim Waqf has made use of Ramadan’s exclusion of Jews from Temple Mount to remove large mounds of dirt potentially containing precious Temple-era artefacts, using the dirt for construction or dumping it in unknown locations. Read more here.
