It was with a mixture of joy, sorrow, relief, and anxiety that the nation heard the news of Boris Johnson’s resignation at the culmination of sustained pressure in the media, in Parliament, across the country and finally among his own supporters. It is a strange quirk of British politics that the issues that brought him down were not matters of political policy but of moral integrity and values.
The roots go deep
This demand for the nation’s leaders to be men and women of high moral standards and integrity – which is inherited from our Victorian forefathers – is surprising to see in an age of secularism when most of our Judaeo-Christian heritage of biblical values and belief system have been swept away. Members of the Royal family, political leaders, churchmen, and others in leadership positions have all come under the same form of judgement, which surely is an indication that the ethical roots of the nation, which are based upon the Bible, run deep – like the roots of a huge old oak tree that has withstood the battering of storms for hundreds of years.
All this shows that when the time is right there will be a spiritual revival in the nation; but a lot has to happen before that occurs. The spiritual apostasy of the nation runs very deep. We have had the truth of the gospel for centuries, but we have steadfastly ignored all the warning signs and turned our backs upon the word of God. And this is why a new Prime Minister will not change our country.
We are at a stage in world history where God is preparing to judge the nations.
The plain fact is that we are a nation under judgement, and so are all the countries of the world, because we are at a stage in world history where God is preparing to judge the nations. I have been living with Jeremiah 25 for a long time, knowing that on the world stage we are heading into the most indescribable storm of turbulence.
Jeremiah was told by God: “Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them.” He was further told: “This is what the Lord Almighty says: Look! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth” (Jer 25:15-16 and 32).
Days of turbulence
We are facing a similar situation today of indescribable turbulence in every region of the world, where economic problems will combine with social and political turbulence to create an unprecedented situation of basic shortages and social unrest that will shake every nation. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is already having long-term effects, which will further destabilise international relationships in the aftermath of two years of the Covid pandemic that has seriously weakened the nations. This is all part of the great shaking of the nations that is prophesied in Isaiah 2, Haggai 2, Hebrews 12 and many other parts of the Bible.
The upheaval in Parliament that has brought down the Prime Minister is the opening wave of political turbulence that will shake the nation.
Whoever becomes Prime Minister of Britain will inherit a poisoned chalice of intensive difficulty and multiple challenges. It is amazing that people are already queueing up for the job that they will bitterly rue in the days to come. All the pillars of our society are going to be shaken, from the banks to the monarchy. The upheaval in Parliament that has brought down the Prime Minister is the opening wave of political turbulence that will shake the nation as we head for a ‘winter of discontent’ when wage demands and shortages will force people onto the streets, making demands upon the Government that they will be unable to fulfil.
Great opportunity
In this ministry we have been prophesying days of great shaking since the 1980s, but we have also foreseen that there will come a point of despair when people cry out, “O God what has gone wrong?” At this point the Bible believing remnant in the nation will have the greatest opportunity for centuries to declare the word of the Lord and bring comfort, strength, and spiritual renewal to vast numbers who will be open to the gospel.
Maybe the day of prayer that is being requested by a number of ministry leaders could be the opportunity for seeking the Lord to work out his purposes in the great shaking of the nation and bring a spirit of repentance if the nation is to survive the coming shaking.
